On Sunday morning, about 50 young wrestlers from Clarion-Goldfield-Dows and plenty more from other area schools gathered at the high school for the annual Dan McCool Tournament.
McCool, who passed away in 2020, was a Clarion High School graduate who worked for the Des Moines Register as a sports journalist and photographer for 30 years. According to iowawrestlinghalloffame.com, he was posthumously inducted into the Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame for his “dedication to the sport as both a journalist and author.” McCool covered wrestling at the high school, college, and international levels, earned many national wrestling awards, and even has a media award named in his honor.
At the end of Sunday’s tournament, the Cowboys and Cowgirls brought home plenty of medals and honored McCool’s legacy by winning the 1st place team trophy.
Local grapplers competed in a beginners division (Pre-K), a super pee wee division (1st-2nd), a pee wee division (3rd-4th), and a junior division (5th-6th).
