Cowboys Celebrate Trip To State Duals

On Tuesday, February 4, the #8 (2A) Humboldt Wildcats hosted a regional dual meet against #9 (2A) Clarion-Goldfield-Dows and #14 (2A) Hampton-Dumont-CAL. The winner of the C-G-D vs. H-D-C dual would advance to face Humboldt, and the winner of that dual would qualify for the State Dual Team Tournament in Coralville.

Against the Bulldogs, 132-pounder Adrian Phetxoumphone kick started the Cowboys with a 19-4 technical fall over Charlie Showalter. Kolton Hefti (138) and Colin Sesker (144) both won decisions, but H-D-C took a 12-11 lead after victories at 150 and 157.

Their lead was short lived, and the Cowboys rattled off five straight victories. Caleb Seaba won 14-3 after earning takedown and near fall points in the 3rd period of his bout at 165. Next, Ryland Morgan (175) recorded a 14-3 major decision and Charlie Campbell (190) had a 19-4 technical fall.

In an impassioned match at 215, Traesyn Cope outlasted H-D-C’s Maddon Evans 9-7 in a come from behind decision. When the gym finally settled down, JT Kelso made quick work of his opponent at 285 with a pin in 1:34.

H-D-C picked up five more team points at 106, but Linden Phetxoumphone (120) had a 16-0 technical fall and Ryan Hartwig (126) pinned William Vosburg to put the finishing touches on a 50-17 Cowboy win.

After a short break, Humboldt took the mat against C-G-D and wasted no time putting 12 points on the board with pins at 138 and 144. Colin Sesker moved up a weight class and defeated 150-pounder Jaxson Kirchhoff 4-1 for the Cowboys’ first points.

At 157, Seaba held a narrow lead for most of regulation, but was edged by Braden Downs in the first sudden victory period. Campbell (175) pinned Trey Al-Hameed in 23 seconds, but Humboldt led 31-9 after victories at 165, 190, and 215.

The mighty Cowboys answered the call with four straight pins by Kelso, Paxton Redenius (106), Angel Cortes (113), and Linden Phetxoumphone. Adrian Phetxoumphone’s tech fall over Jonny Hayden sealed the deal, and Clarion-Goldfield-Dows stamped their ticket to the 2025 IHSAA State Dual Tournament with a 38-37 win over the Wildcats.
