Explore the latest industry and academic insights into anaerobic digestion technologies, from research to reality
AMES, Iowa – The “Emerging Science of Anaerobic Digestion” webinar series returns for 2025. This year’s series will alternate between industry and academic perspectives, offering a well-rounded look at the latest advancements, challenges and opportunities in anaerobic digestion.

Hosted by Daniel Andersen, associate professor in agricultural and biosystems engineering at Iowa State University, this monthly webinar series is tailored for farmers, technical service providers and project developers who want to deepen their understanding of anaerobic digestion. Each session will feature expert insights into project implementation, research findings, innovative applications in the field, and potential challenges faced in developing anaerobic digestion as an energy production and environmentally sustainable practice.
Webinar schedule
All sessions will take place on the second Tuesday of each month at 1 p.m. Central time via Zoom.
- March 11 – Scott Martin, Burns & McDonnell: Implementation perspectives on anaerobic digestion projects
- April 8 – Jake Willsea, Iowa State University: Does more frequent digester effluent utilization influence carbon intensity scoring and effluent storage and use economics?
- May 13 – Andrew Wedel, director of innovation and sustainability, Settje Agri-Services and Engineering: Roller compressed concrete at beef and dairy lots; impacts on manure collection and digestion properties
- June 10 – Keith Webster, Iowa State University: Harvest logistics of biomass materials
- July 8 – RAE: Case study and background on installing covered lagoon digesters on swine farms
Episodes will continue August through December with speakers and topics yet to be announced.
Through this series, participants will gain valuable insights into the latest research and real-world applications of anaerobic digestion technologies, Andersen noted. The sessions will highlight both the practical aspects of digester implementation and the scientific advancements shaping the future of sustainable manure and landscape management and energy production.
