The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows softball team had their final regular season game of the year last Monday night at Cowgirl Field.

The Humboldt Wildcats (12-13) were in town for a makeup game and were tested by the scrappy Cowgirls from start to finish.

Humboldt put up four runs in the first inning, but starting pitcher Tess Wibholm settled in and ended the frame with a strikeout.

With two down in the bottom of the first, Blaire Askelsen hit a triple to deep center field.  Cleanup hitter Adelynn Howell brought Askelsen home with a single to right, making the score 4-1.

Both teams went scoreless in the next two innings, but Humboldt pushed their lead to 7-1 in the top of the fourth.

Graclyn Bremmer started the bottom of the fourth with a double over Humboldt’s center fielder’s head.  Her courtesy runner later scored on an error, and the score was 7-3 after another Humboldt miscue.

The Wildcats scored three more runs in the next two innings, but the Cowgirls weren’t finished battling.  Freshman Marlee Thompson singled in the sixth to drive in a run, and in the seventh, Askelsen recorded her third hit of the game and scored on a groundout from Howell.

Wibholm pitched all seven innings.  She struck out three, walked two and allowed nine hits.
