Cowboy Sophomore Joins Elite Company

Before the basketball season tipped off, Chaz Lane said one of his primary goals was to make one of the North Central Conference’s All-Conference squads.

After a record-breaking sophomore campaign, that lofty dream was fulfilled for the 6’4” forward.

“It’s a big accomplishment,” Lane said with a grin after his selection to the NCC’s All-Conference Second Team. “Especially because our conference is so good and not many make it. It felt awesome.”

After averaging an impressive 10.5 PPG, 7.1 RPG, and 1.5 APG in 21 games as a freshman Cowboy starter, Lane increased his statistical output significantly in his second year of varsity basketball. His 18.0 PPG tied a C-G-D record and he had the fifth highest scoring average in the entire NCC. Lane also claimed the third highest RPG average and the second highest BPG game average in the entire conference.

Chaz set Clarion-Goldfield-Dows school records for most points scored in a game (36 in a win over Hampton-Dumont-CAL) and most rebounds secured in a game (18 against Belmond-Klemme).  His 218 total rebounds this season and 9.5 RPG average were both also school records.

Fittingly, Chaz makes his living “in the lane.” The sophomore’s scoring achievements are all the more impressive when you consider the fact that he attempted only 33 three-point shots in 2024-25.

“I get to the hoop pretty fast and just try to take it up strong,” Lane acknowledged matter-of-factly when asked about his strengths on the court.

Next season, Chaz is hopeful for another All-Conference nod, but he says his goals are mostly team related.

“We talked a lot about hosting the first round of playoffs,” he commented. “It’d be cool to get a couple of wins there and get as far as we possibly can as a team. As a team we wanted to be around .500 this season and that didn’t happen. That will be next year. We’ll aim for that.”
