A show of appreciation for law enforcement

In a time of national unrest, emergency responders, like police officers, continue to serve and protect, selflessly giving of their time and risking their lives to protect the communities they serve. So too do the men and women of the Eagle Grove Police Department, along with the Wright County Sheriff’s Office the Iowa State Patrol, and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.

These agencies answered the call of duty last week right here in Eagle Grove.  On Tuesday, Sept. 15, they responded to a report of a Wright County Deputy who had his vehicle stolen from him and was run over by the suspect.  According to information released from the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the suspect was driving while barred, was in possession of a handgun as a felon, and was also a suspect in a Goldfield disturbance call prior to the Deputy being run over in Eagle Grove.

Luckily, the Deputy’s injuries were not life-threatening and he was treated and released.  He later noted on social media how grateful he was for the many people who reached out to check on him and for the friends, neighbors, and families who brought food and checked on his immediate family members.

The next day brought an array of appreciation for all the area law enforcement workers who responded to the call.  Katelyn Colorado, human resources specialist for Daybreak Foods Inc. – Central Iowa Region, said their company wanted to show their appreciation for keeping our community safe.  They showed up at the Eagle Grove Police Department with donuts for everyone.

“We are grateful for the services of the Eagle Grove Police Department and the Wright County Sheriff’s Department every day, but especially during the hard days,” said Colorado.

Mike Hackbarth, owner of Twiins Shoppe in Eagle Grove and Clarion, followed suit.  To show his appreciation, Twiins Shoppe in Eagle Grove offered all local law enforcement officers of the EGPD and the Sheriff’s Office to stop in and enjoy a free breaded tenderloin and fries on them.

We just decided to do it after the event (of September 15 in Eagle Grove).  With everything that’s going on in the world, you never really see that  type of stuff happen in small rural areas, so we wanted to show them our appreciation,” said Hackbarth.

He added that they got the idea after they were out driving and saw an officer go by and thought to themselves, “We really should do something for them – and they decided on a free meal.

“The officers all seemed very appreciative of it,” he said.

The entire community is grateful for the men and women on the front lines and behind the scenes working to keep our community safe.  We are forever humbled by your selflessness and commitment to do what is right.
