Homecoming 2020 underway: “Time flies at CGD”

It’s that magical time of year again! Homecoming is upon us! This week, September 21 to 25 is Clarion-Goldfield-Dows’s homecoming. Like has happened to most festivities amidst coronavirus concerns, plans had to be altered, but many fun activities and events are still scheduled.

The theme this year is “Time Flies at CGD,” which is inspired by “Back to the Future.” Last week, to set the mood, classes got to decorate their hallway. Though there was no school on Monday due to staff professional development, the fun got rolling on Tuesday with dress-up days at the high school. That day, students got to wear their pajamas for ‘Sleepy 70s.’ Wednesday is dubbed ‘Touristy 2000s’ and everyone is encouraged to dress like a tourist. Thursday will be Class Colors day where every class wears a certain color and the staff deck out in tie-dye. And Friday will be ‘Spirit 60s’ day where everyone wears their red and black, CGD fan gear, or homecoming shirts that were designed by Raven Kinnetz and Paige German.

Thursday will be a fun day if the weather cooperates. This day during homecoming week is usually game day where the classes compete against each other. The games will take place outside on the soccer field this year. Favorites include hula hoop pass and the class tug o’ war face offs in addition to some minute-to-win-it games being added. Rules stipulate that students will still have to wear their PPE during the games.

Of course, there are home sporting events throughout the week, with a home volleyball game Thursday night versus Iowa Falls-Alden and the football game Friday against Pocahontas Area.

Unfortunately, some events were cancelled this year because of the difficulty with social distancing logistics. On Friday, there will be no parade and no pep rally. The school will also not be putting on a homecoming dance, though parents are planning an event off school premises.

Though the regular coronation of the 2020 Homecoming King and Queen won’t be held during a pep rally, it will still take place.  The homecoming court will be presented at the half time of the football game Friday evening with the king and queen announced then.

This year’s homecoming court is made up of ten seniors chosen by their peers. The queen candidates include Kendall Lienemann, Natalie Kirstein, Morgan Middleton, Raven Kinnetz, and Brenna Cross. King candidates are Reed Abbas, Bryce Allen, Kain Nelson, Gavin Wilson, and Rafael Jimenez. See the photo for more information.
