With two meets cancelled so far into their 2019 campaign, the South Central Calhoun cross country teams have not had the luxury of running against other schools. Due to this bout with Mother Nature, the Titans have had to gauge themselves through practice and working their way up by way of shaving time.
SCC continued this build up by taking part in the Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto-Charter Oak-Ute Cross Country Meet, which took place last Thursday at the Willow Vale Golf Club in Mapleton.
In a loaded field, the varsity girls hauled in a sixth place finish while the varsity boys finished eighth in the overall team standings. Kingsley-Pierson-Woodbury Central took top billing on the girls’ side, while Treynor won the boys’ side of the meet.
The junior varsity girls took third in the JV standings, as the junior varsity boys settled for fourth place.
The Titans will compete at the Denison-Schleswig Invitational, which will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday in Denison. SCC will then run a little closer to home, as they will participate in the Pocahontas Area Invitational at 9 a.m. in Pocahontas.
Results from the two meets will be posted in an upcoming edition of The Graphic-Advocate.
The Titans sorely missed their senior captain in Mariah Hardy, but were paced by sophomore Alexia Nelson’s 18th place finish and time of 23:06.60. Junior Brielle Korleski tabbed a 30th place spot with a time of 24:12.31, followed by teammate Alayna Murley’s 32nd place showing and time of 24:17.10.
Right behind Murley was fellow junior Ashley Hanks, who placed 33rd with a time of 24:21.21. Senior Megan Decker (57th, 28:15.43) and sophomore Allison Riat (60th, 29:30.91) rounded things out for the purple, black and white.
Juninor Ben Englin spearheaded the boys, taking 26th with a time of 19:07.24. Senior captain Bryce Smidt wasn’t too far behind, with a 36th place finish and a time of 19:50.53.
Freshman Tyler Lightner finished 38th, clocking in a time of 20:02.75, followed by teammate Justin Hanks’ 46th place finish and a time of 20:57.37.
Right behind Hanks was senior Ben Ludwig, who hauled in a 47th place showing with a time of 21:08.64. Freshman Eli Wheelock (53rd, 21:25.40) and sophomore Zach Wilson (73rd, 24:59.73) also represented the boys’ varsity team.
In the junior varsity realm, sophomore Carter Soyer led SCC with a time of 20:50.60 and a ninth place spot, as freshman Nik Whipkey took home a 22nd place finish while clocking in a time of 23:45.02. Sophomore Russell DeWitt (31st, 26:10.85) rounded things out alongside freshmen Parker Pagel (28:03.85) and Caleb Blair (36th, 30:54.24).
