Rotary kicks off another year of giving with their Secret Santa project

While the Clarion Rotary Club takes part in many service projects, both local and international, in December, they work on a special project for Christmastime: their Secret Santa project in cooperation with local law enforcement. And this year, the need is greater than ever.

As they have in the past, the Rotary will be raising money to split between the Wright County Sheriff’s Office and the Clarion Police Department, who divide it for the officers and deputies to hand out, typically looking for people they know could use a little help around the holidays. This year, the police department and the sheriff’s office also both hope to use some of the funds for bigger gifts. In the past, they have worked to pool larger funds to provide families with groceries, clothes and toys for kids.

Last year, the two law enforcement agencies gave out about $2,500 to local families. This year, they’re hoping to raise that much and more. Wright County Sheriff Jason Schluttenhofer says, “The giveaway has been a very positive experience for everyone involved, especially the folks we help out. And this year we know that many families are really struggling and could use the extra help.” Clarion Police Chief Steve TerHark adds that his officers really enjoy helping people out.

The Rotary is collecting the funds to give to the officers by December 11. Donations may be dropped off at First Bank, First Citizens Bank and First State Bank drive ups. Checks can be written to the Clarion Rotary. Donations can also be made online on their GoFundMe page. There is a link to the page on the Clarion Rotary’s Facebook page or search “2020 Clarion Rotary Secret Santa Project” on gofundme.com.

You can also give donations to Rotarians, including Brooke Nerlien, Sherri O’Brien, Deb Prehm, Belva German, Missy Loux, Dr. Jon Ahrendsen, Steve Mulford and Mark Skogerboe. O’Brien says that Rotary is committed to both local and international causes but they particularly enjoy helping local citizens with this holiday project.

Both the sheriff’s office and police department also add that people can contact their offices if you know someone in need that could use that extra help this holiday season. “It’s really, really appreciated,” the sheriff said. “It’s been a great program, and this year, we’re masked up and ready to help.”
