To replace the cancelled two-day Independence Tournament, the CGD wrestling team instead traveled to Osage to face the host Green Devils along with New Hampton/Turkey Valley and Union (LaPorte City). They defeated Union for their only win of the day, as Remi Hanson (138) led off with a fall in a mere 42 seconds over Hilmer. After giving up six points to the Knights on a bye at 145, they would lose the next four matches as Bryce Allen (152), Garrett Seaba (160), Rafael Jimenez (170) and Christian Gaytan (182) all left the mat in defeat.
The 24-6 deficit was quickly turned around and surpassed, as the Cowboys reeled off seven straight wins. Erick Perez (195) and Camden Hanson (220) took successive forfeits, followed by a pin in 1:41 for Danny Chavez over Hanson at heavyweight. The top of the order brought a bye for Reed Reiland (106), followed by a win for Kaeden Langfitt (113) as he barely broke a sweat with a nine-seconds pin of Mehlert. Ricardo Gaytan (120) had his hand raised for a bye, followed by Ethan Traub (126) scoring a fall in 2:49 over Sparks. Cale Kirstein would lose at 132, but the dual win was already secured.
The dual with the host Green Devils proved much more difficult. It started out well enough, as the Cowboys took the first four matches. Reed Abbas (145) won by fall in a quick 37 seconds over LaGue, Allen took a pin in :48 over Gast, Mack Seaba (160) pinned Wolf in 3:42 and Garrett took a 5-1 decision over Muller at 160 pounds)
It went quickly downhill from there, as Osage took the next nine bouts to go up 48-21. The only other points the Cowboys would see was in the final match at 138, as R. Hanson picked up a quick nine-second fall over Potter. In JV action, Jackson Beisel was the lone winner of five total matches as he took a 12-8 decision at 132 pounds.
Versus NH/TV, a loss by Allen at 152 was countered by a 3-1 overtime win by G. Seaba on a takedown. NH/TV then rattled off four straight wins to build a 24-3 advantage. Chavez finally stopped it in a pin of Reicks in 3:42. Reiland then lost at 106, followed by Langfitt taking a forfeit win. Traub followed with a 12-7 victory over Anderson, using two takedowns and two near-falls along the way. Gaytan then lost his match to put points back on the other side of the board.
Kirstein won by fall in just :36 as the Cowboys tried hard to stay in the dual. R. Hanson’s pin in 3:43 gave them a chance for a tie, but they would need another pin for a tie. Abbas would oblige in 1:32 for a 36-36 deadlocked score. The victory would go to NH/TV 37-36 on a tiebreaker. JV winners included Niklas Christopherson by fall in 4:25, Luis Delacruz by fall in :38 and Beisel by 16-1 technical fall.
The team will go to Humboldt this Thursday, then take part in a tournament on Saturday hosted by Aplington-Parkersburg.
