Cowboys lose close game to Clear Lake

The Cowboy basketball team hosted conference leader Clear Lake last Tuesday, and even though they found plenty of scoring it still wasn’t enough in an 89-78 loss to the Lions. Clear Lake led 44-36 at halftime then stretched the margin to nine more points at 67-50 to start the fourth period. The Cowboys did manage to outscored them down the stretch, so they might have had a chance at the upset had they kept it closer earlier in the game.

The team shot 38.4 percent from the field, 66.7 percent from the line and 33.3 percent from three-point land. They made 26 total rebounds (10 on defense), 17 total assists and six total steals. Four players reached double digits in the scoring column. Connor State shined the brightest by draining 23 points through the rims, and was followed by Mateo Martinez with 15, Coady Olson with 12 and Jaxon Carpenter with 11 points. Coady and Jaxon both knocked down two treys each as part of their offensive production. Jacob Moore added eight points, Aidan Harrington seven points and Gavin Wilson two points in supporting roles.

Carpenter cleaned the glass for seven rebounds, followed by State with five and Moore with four. Harrington grabbed three caroms and Martinez, Nevan Foss and Wilson two each. Olson had one rebound of the total. Carpenter played unselfish ball in handing out eight assists, with Martinez and State making three each and Moore two. Olson and Wilson finished with one apiece in the column. Martinez picked pockets for five steals and Carpenter one.

Stats for the games with Iowa Falls-Alden and Humboldt were not yet posted at press time. Watch next week’s Monitor for a summary of those games.
