School board approves budget

At the Monday meeting of the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Board of Education, the group approved the fiscal year 2022 budget. The approved budget was discussed in last week’s Monitor. The agreed upon tax levy rate for the next fiscal year for the district is $13.265 (per thousand dollars of taxable value) for the former Clarion-Goldfield part of the district and $12.725 for the Dows part. This is only a cent or two higher than last year’s levy which was $13.254 and $12.704 respectively. District officials reiterated again that the upcoming building projects did not have an effect on the tax levy.

In old business, in preparation for the building projects (softball/baseball facility and elem/MS gym), the board approved engagement letters for bonding services and bond counsel services. They also set two public hearings for the next meeting. The first is for the proposed issuance of approximately $6.2 million for school infrastructure sales, services and using tax revenue bonds. The second hearing is for the proposed use of SAVE revenue for an athletic facility infrastructure project.

Superintendent Joe Nelson explained during his report that they have engaged ISG Engineering to put together a 10-year facility plan for the district. They will look at the state of the schools to determine lifespans in addition to outdoor campuses. The report will give recommendations regarding when and where to build and will help with future decisions. Nelson said he hopes to share this report with the board in the next couple of months. He also went over a construction update for the softball/baseball complex. This project will be discussed at length in a story in next week’s Monitor.

The board approved the following contracts: Bryce Tegtmeyer (MS/HS Asst. Baseball), Kara Hawker (HS Chemistry/Physics), Joseph Granzow (HS/MS Vocal Teacher), Ronnie Downing (MS Boys Track), Jessica Nail (HS Girls Asst. Track) and Caleb Vogel (HS Head Football Coach). They also approved resignations for Knute Severson (MS Wrestling Coach), Ronnie Downing (MS Football Coach), Amanda Morris (Elem Para), Terri McGivern (MS Boys Track), and Megan Hamilton (Elem Special Education Teacher).
