While we all believed the Cowgirls first win was coming soon, I don’t think anyone could have seen this kind of game coming. It was truly a game of who could score the most, and thankfully it turned out to be our ladies in red & black.
The ‘runfest’ was started by the visiting Warriors in plating nine in the first inning as they tried to stake an early claim to the game. By the end of three it became 11-5 Rockford. The Cowgirls started making their move in the fourth as they crossed the dish five times to pull to within one at 11-10. They brought four more ladies home in the fifth to tie the score at 14-14, then they outscored Rockford by one in the sixth. That one extra run proved to be the difference maker, as each team scored four times in the seventh as the Cowgirls hung on and started celebrating.
Kendall Lienemann swung a big stick on the night, going 3 for 6 with a double, triple and 5 RBI. Brooke Askelsen was equal to the task, going 3 for 5 with an RBI.
Earlier in the week, they fell to Hampton-Dumont/CAL 10-0 on Monday in a five-inning home game. C. Hasty got the only hit, while M. Hasty reached on an error. Clarissa also stole a base. Friesleben allowed three earned on six hits over 3 1/3 innings. She walked six and struck out three. Nyla Wibholm threw the rest and allowed only one hit.
On Wednesday they lost 5-1 at Algona. Kennedy Trca scored the lone run, while C. Hasty, Lienemann, Dow and Johnson all showed a good eye in drawing a walk each. Clarissa also reached on an error as well as stealing two bases. Friesleben threw four innings, allowing five earned on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
They finished the week with a 19-8 home loss to Southeast Valley. The team scored three runs each in the second and fifth frames, two more in between in the fourth. Hennigar and Askelsen both had good showings at the plate with a 2 for 3 night for each and three RBI each.
