The set scores were close as the home team Algona Bulldogs gave the red & block all they could handle but still fell short of taking a set in the C-G-D sweep. Scores were 25-23,25-19 and 25-23. Team serving for the night was at 85.9 percent, with Brooke Askelsen leading the way at 14 of 16 (two aces). Lexie Lane and Summer Traub were both 13 of 14 with Lane making two aces and Traub one. Clarissa Hasty was good on 10 of 10, Karlee Lehman 7 of 10 and Indy Johnson 4 of 7.
Nikki Kapka set the ball for nine assists, with Johnson making four, Lane two and Traub one. Traub pounded 10 kills over the net, followed by Lane and Kennedy Trca with six apiece and Kapka with three. Johnson and Delia Swanson chipped in one each to the total.
B. Askelsen had 15 digs for the match, with Hasty at six and Traub at five. Lehman finished with three and Kapka, Swanson, Lane and Trca all two each. Lane and Trca had three huge solo blocks each. Kapka and Traub added one apiece, along with two block assists to go with one each from Kapka and Lane.
At Saturday’s tournament in Osage, The ladies could not manage to pull out a match win and only picked up one set all day. They lost to a good Waverly-Shell Rock team by scores of 21-10 and 21-8. Serving was at 90.5 percent, with Traub 4 of 5 (one ace). Hasty, Lane and Lauren Brooks were 3 of 3 with all of Lauren’s being for aces. Lehman had five sets and Lane five kills along with seven digs. Hasty and Trca went above the net for a solo block each.
“We started out the match strong and just ran out of steam,” said head coach Katrina TerHark. “They’re a great team and pushed the tempo on us offensively.”
They lost to the host team by scores of 21-11 and 21-18. Team serving was 100 percent, with Hasty and Lane both 8 of 8 as Lexie nailed three aces. Kapka and Lehman made two assists each, Lane made four kills and Hasty seven digs.
“They came out strong and we had too many errors in the first set,” said TerHark. “We were much more aggressive in the second set. We just couldn’t get the win.”
They lost to Forest City but did win a set. Scores were W26-24, L 21-15 and L15-12. Team serving was 95.7 percent, with Johnson 12 of 12 (one) and Traub 11 of 11 (one). Ady Askelsen and Lehman had seven assists each and Lane made 17 kills. Hasty and B. Askelsen made 11 digs each and Lane had two solo blocks.
“We carried some good momentum over from the match with Osage,” said the head coach. “In the third set, we just couldn’t get the pass when we needed it. We are learning and trying some new things so the wins will come.”
They lost to Charles City by scores of 25-22 and 25-14. Team serving was at 89.2 percent, with Traub at 9 of 10 (two), Lane 7 of 8 and Hasty 7 of 9. A. Askelsen had six assists and Lane six kills. Hasty made eight digs and Lane a solo block.
“We had our opportunities to pull away with the win, but just ran out of steam,” said TerHark. “We definitely showed signs of greatness today. We just need to continue to work to put everything together consistently. The more we play the better off we are.”
For the day, Traub was 28 of 30 with three aces and Hasty 26 of 29 with two, Johnson went 23 of 25 (one), Lane 18 of 18 (three) and Lehman 16 of 17 (one). Lehman set for 17 assists and A. Askelson 14. Lane had 32 kills, Traub 10 and Hasty eight.
Hasty made 34 digs, followed by Lane with 25, B. Askelsen with 22, Johnson with 21 and Lehman with eight. Lane made three total solo blocks.
