The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Cowboys wrapped up 2A district play on their home field with senior night, this last Friday night. Their opponent would be the defending class 2A state champion Falcons of OABCIG. The Cowboys battled hard against an offense that racked up over 400 yards of passing that would result in 5 touchdowns through the air and two more on the ground along with an interception returned for a score.
The Falcons would get on the board first, but the Cowboys would answer with a drive that was capped off by an 11 yard touchdown run by Nevan Foss to make the score 6-8 with just over 4 minutes left in the first quarter. The Falcons would score 4 more times before QB Preston Gardner would connect with Foss for a 41yard TD pass with just 46 seconds left in the first half. The Cowboys would trail 34-12 going into the locker room at half.
The third quarter was just as action packed. Following a Falcon score, Nevan Foss would field the kickoff and race down the sideline 88 yards for his third score, but he wasn’t quite done. In the fourth quarter, Foss would recover a Falcon fumble and return it 40 yards to the house for his fourth touchdown of the night. The 2-point conversion was good as Gardner hit Mack Seaba in the endzone.
The Falcons (7-1 overall) would leave Clarion with the victory by a score of 56-26. Defensively, the Cowboys were led by Ethan Traub, Erick Perez, Nevan Foss and Cale Kerstein. The Cowboys fall to 3-5 on the season.
Coach Caleb Vogel said “You put us in any other district in 2A and we are playoff contenders. Our district has three teams (Southeast Valley, OABCIG, and Spirit Lake) that very well could win the 2A title. This is by far the toughest district in the state among all classes.”
The Cowboys have faced 4 top ten teams in their district play. Southeast Valley is ranked number 1, OABCIG 5, Spirit Lake 8 and Estherville-Lincoln Central was the number 1 going into their game with CGD. The Cowboys travel to Albia to face the Blue Demons on the gridiron with a 6:30 kick-off this Friday night.
