Cowgirls score huge win at Iowa Falls-Alden

The Cowgirl basketball team Iowa Falls-Alden last Tuesday and were all over the Cadets from the opening tip. Jumping out to a 13-6 lead after the first eight minutes then extending it to a 21-9 halftime score, the ladies never looked back from there in a 44-14 win.

Raven Kinnetz poured in 15 points including a trey, with Morgan Middleton joining her at 11 points on 5 of 8 from the field. Courtney Harle scored seven points, Quinn Hansch and Lexie Lane three points each. Jadyn Jondle and Kendall Lienemann two points apiece and Emma Conlon one point. Middleton led the rebound column with seven, followed by Kinnetz with four and both Lienemann and Harle with three rebounds each. Jondle grabbed two caroms, while Nicole Waters, Conlon, Hansch and Emma Keller managed one each.

Kinnetz and Harle dished out two assists each, with Jondle, Lienemann and Middleton credited with one apiece. Kinnetz was tenacious on defense in getting five steals. Jondle, Conlon and Hansch all had two each, with Lane, Keller and Middleton making one apiece. Alaina Friesleben had a blocked shot.

“It was good to see us recover from a pair of losses against some tough competition,” stated head coach Adam Vorrie. “The girls put on an incredible defensive effort, which has continued to be our team’s strength.”

They just got by Algona 49-43 in a make-up home game on Thursday. The home team held a slim 28-21 halftime lead. Three ladies finished in double digits. Kinnetz drained the rims for 15 points on 6 of 10 from the field, while Hansch netted 13 points with three treys. Middleton had 10 points on 5 of 7 in field goals. Lienemann scored four points, Conlon three points and both Jondle and Harle two points each.

Harle made eight rebounds, followed by Middleton with seven and Jondle with five. Jondle matched that with five assists, while Kinnetz was a force on defense in making seven steals of the ball.

“This was a huge win for us, as we were pretty evenly matched,” said the head coach. “We talked before the game about limiting their opportunities to score by rebounding and the girls responded. Our inside presence really shined through and allowed us to shoot clean shots from the perimeter.”

They took on Humboldt on Friday for Winterfest, turning back the Wildcats by a 45-35 final. Kinnetz burned the nets for 18 points with two treys, while Middleton knocked down 14 points. Hansch added seven points, Harle four points and Jondle a bucket in support. Middleton nearly reached a double-double at nine rebounds, with Kinnetz making six and both Jondle and Hansch four each.

Middleton dished the pumpkin for three assists, with Jondle, Lienemann and Hansch at two each. Kinnetz had another great defensive night with four steals.

“Another huge win against a pretty evenly matched team,” said Vorrie. “We played a very physical game against them, as they have some size to match up against us, but we battled all night. This capped off a great week od gritty, tough basketball and we look forward to this coming week’s challenges.”

In a game not reported on earlier, the Cowgirls lost 58-34 on Friday the 24th at Hampton-Dumont/CAL. Harle scored 11 points and Hansch 10 points, while Harle grabbed eight rebounds. Kinnetz led in assists with three, Harle in steals with five and Kinnetz in blocked shots with one.

The team is now 13-4 overall, and winners of three in a row and 11 of their last 13 ball games. They go to St. Edmond this Friday.
