CGD’s Cowboys control Algona’s Bulldogs with a 62-30 vanquish

Heading into the game 6-0, the Cowboys were hungry for a seventh consecutive win, and they got it.

The match started hot, as it lit up the atmosphere of the crowd and momentum of the game. After yet another conference competition, the Cowboys picked up another crucial win as they defeated the Algona Bulldogs 62-30. Hosted by the Bulldogs, the Cowboys were ready for their last game of 2021 before Christmas vacation. From the start of the game, the Cowboys remained in the driver’s seat as they controlled the match. 16 points were scored by the Cowboys in the first quarter, while the Bulldogs only scored seven. “We got off to a very fast start and took over the game early,” stated Coach Jason Berning. Heading into the second quarter, the Cowboys continued their control over the Bulldogs as their drive and aggression mirrored from the first. The Cowboys added 18 points to the second quarter with the Bulldogs adding six. The first half came to a close with the Cowboys up 34-13.

“The third quarter belonged to us as well,” Berning added, also stating, “our defense really led the way, limiting what they could do. They came into the game averaging 70 points per game. For us to hold them to 30 is a big accomplishment.” The defense definitely continued in the third quarter, as well as the offense as the Cowboys conceded nine points from Algona while sinking 23. The Cowboys entered the final quarter with a promising lead of 57-22. Though scoring five points in the fourth, the Cowboys only allowed an additional eight for the Bulldogs, as their defense persisted. “Cael Chase continues his strong defensive play, limiting their leading scorer to just two points,” Berning included.

The game ended just the way it began: with the Cowboys in control. Not only were the Cowboys in control of Tuesday night’s vanquish, they also currently remain in command of the North Central conference, as they sit comfortably in first place. With a concluding victory of 62-30 for the year 2021, the Cowboys have kicked off their season greatly, as Berning states, “We look forward to starting back up after the holiday break and continuing our strong play.”

SR Connor State handled the offense on Tuesday night, as he contributed a massive 30 points for the team, as well as two blocks, an assist, a steal, and five rebounds. SR Jaxon Carpenter added 12 points, along with an impressive four steals, six assists, and six rebounds. JR Nevan Foss delivered seven points, along with three steals. SR Aidan Harrington scored four on Tuesday night, and contributed a steal, two assists, and six rebounds. Scoring three points for the Cowboys were SR Coady Olson, SR Jacob Moore, and SR Tyson Berning.

The Cowboys are set to host Hampton-Dumont-CAL on Friday, January 7, at 7:30 PM.
