WEST FORK
The Cowgirls travelled to West Fork Monday night, where they took on the 7-2 Warhawks. It was a tough battle for the Cowgirls, who approached this match with five straight losses. Their most recent loss was against conference competitor Hampton-Dumont-CAL.
The match against West Fork made one full month since their last victory, which was against Webster City as they won 41-40.
The match started off weak for the Cowgirls yet strong for the Warhawks. The first eight minutes of the match saw two points from the Cowgirls, while trailing 11 points behind the Warhawks who scored 13. The second quarter was even more brutal for the Cowgirls defensively. They managed to put away seven buckets to seal the first half, though defensively letting up 21 points in the second half. With the first half over, the Cowgirls had only nine points with the Warhawks 25 points ahead at 34.
The second half took off similarly for the Warhawks, who scored 15 points. In the third quarter, the Cowgirls added more pressure and aggression to the match, scoring another seven points. With the third quarter over, the Cowgirls were down 49-16 heading into the fourth. Down 33 points, a miraculous comeback was unlikely, though the Cowgirls remain aggressive and determined to add more points to the scoreboard. The game concluded 57-24 with both teams ending the final quarter scoring eight points each.

POCAHONTAS
4-6 was the Cowgirls. 6-4 was the Indians. Hoping for a 5-6 record versus the Indians, with a difficult game against Humboldt, and then two highly predictable victories over Eagle Grove and St. Edmond in the next week, the Cowgirls’ season could very well rotate for the better. Though the season isn’t over yet, a 5-6 record was not what happened for the Cowgirls as they sit 4-7.
The game was hosted by the Indians Tuesday night, as their aggression and domination unleashed right from tip-off. The Cowgirls struggled to deny points from the Indians, as they scored 22 right in the first quarter. The Cowgirls, though pressured by the Indians, stood strong and persisted through the difficulty against the Indians and the energy from the fans against them. The first quarter ended 22-7 with the Indians ahead. The second quarter saw similar performances from both teams as the Indians scored 29 points. The Cowgirls added six before half-time, as they were down 51-13 by half-time.
Based on history, the Pocahontas Indians are known for their success over the Cowgirls. Winning twice throughout their last 10 matchups all-time, the CGD Cowgirls haven’t seen victory over the Indians since 2020, and before that since 2007. Like anything, there’s always time for change.
The second half kicked off weaker for the Indians, though they held a comfortable 38 point lead. The Indians scored 11 in the third quarter, while the Cowgirls were, again, limited to seven. As the fourth quarter arrived, the Cowgirls were again limited to seven points to close the game. Meanwhile, the Indians only added three points in the final quarter as they sealed the deal with a 65-27 vanquish.

HUMBOLDT
Facing fellow conference rivals was not going to be an easy matchup for the Cowgirls, nor the Wildcats. Both teams showed promise in Thursday night’s matchup, as the two teams battled for a crucial win for both the regular season standings and the conference standings.
The first quarter was won by the Wildcats as they poured 15 points over the Cowgirls, who scored six. Though down by nine and heading into the second quarter, the Cowgirls displayed their aggressiveness and hunger for the ball. The Cowgirls ended the first half with 12 points scored in the second quarter with a score of 18 while the Wildcats accumulated 35 in the first half.
The second half took off with more points scored by both teams, but the Wildcats continued to prove their dominance over the Cowgirls. The third quarter concluded with eight points from the Cowgirls and 13 from the Wildcats. The fourth quarter saw the most points scored by the Cowgirls that night, as they sank 11 while the Wildcats added five. The match ended 56-31 with the Wildcats on top.
Though the Cowgirls have conceded a heavy streak of losses in the past eight games, their three upcoming opponents were successful wins earlier this season. With a win from each team, the Cowgirls can boost up to a 7-8 record. First on their list is Eagle Grove, as they are set to host the Eagles on Monday, Jan. 17, at 6:15 PM.
