Cowgirls capture victory over Eagle Grove and St. Edmond, experience defeat from Webster City

VS EAGLE GROVE
The Cowgirls saw another successful night over Eagle Grove with a crushing score of 61-24. Earlier this season, the Cowgirls defeated the Eagles 53-27. Monday night’s game saw the same energy and domination from the Cowgirls. Following eight straight losses, one could only imagine how hungry the Cowgirls were for a win. And that’s just what they got Monday night.

The first quarter saw 15 points from the Cowgirls, as they powered over the Eagles with constant interceptions and blockings. The Cowgirls defense played a major role in their victory over the Eagles, as the many interceptions led to scoring opportunities for the Cowgirls. The Cowgirls took advantage of their scoring opportunities, executing their shots and securing their lead with a comfortable lead throughout the entirety of the game. While the Cowgirls secured 15, the Eagles scored three to close the first quarter. The second quarter saw an impressive performance from the Eagles, as they poured 13 points over the Cowgirls. However, the Cowgirls maintained their stretched lead as they added 14 points, closing the first half with a 29-16 lead.

In the second half, the Cowgirls continued their dominating lead, only allowing eight points throughout the entire half. While the Eagles only scored one point in the third quarter, the Cowgirls drained 24. The third quarter saw the least amount of points from the Eagles with the most amount of points from the Cowgirls. Leading 53-17, the Cowgirls had a relaxing fourth quarter as the game was fairly over. The Cowgirls finished off the Eagles with eight points while the Eagles added seven, concluding the match in a 61-24 clobber.

Next up for the Cowgirls were the St. Edmond Gaels, as they faced the Gaels on Tuesday, Jan. 18.

VS. ST. EDMOND
The CGD Cowgirls snatched another victory last week, defeating conference competitors St. Edmond Gaels 51-36.

The opening of the game saw difficulty from both teams, though it were the Cowgirls who stood on top, 11-7. The second quarter saw similar performances from both teams as the Cowgirls secured 13 and the Gaels, eight. The first half ended 24-15 with the Cowgirls holding on to the lead.

The opening of the second half began similarly to the opening of the first half, as the Cowgirls poured 14 points over the Gaels while conceding nine. The aggression from the Cowgirls never ceased as they continuously dominated the Gaels through each eight minute quarter. This aggression transitioned through the final quarter, as the Cowgirls ended the Gaels’ misery scoring 13 points. Though the Cowgirls won, the Gaels managed to unleash one final say as they finished the game scoring 12 points.

The match ended 51-36 with the Cowgirls grabbing another crucial victory. Improving their record to 5-8, the Cowgirls sought a sixth victory as they hosted the Webster City Lynx next. Last time around, the Cowgirls managed to defeat the Lynx by a mere point with a final score of 41-40. Now it was just a matter of claiming a second victory over the conference competitors.

VS. WEBSTER CITY
Webster City surely got their revenge on the CGD Cowgirls, as their aggression and immense amount of urgency proved they were the better team Friday night. The Lynx got off to a rapid start Friday night, draining threes and twos over the Cowgirls, but no matter the pressure the Lynx put forth, the Cowgirls stayed in the game and fought back, providing the spectators with a thrilling matchup.

With only three points scored in the first quarter from the Cowgirls, the Lynx capitalized as they added 13. The Cowgirls struggled to keep up with the offense from the Lynx, while also struggling to deliver points to increase their score. Perhaps the Lynx studied the Cowgirls after their first meet earlier this season, losing by just one point. The Cowgirls provided a prominent response in the second quarter as they drained 10 points over the Lynx, who only scored half as much before the conclusion of the first half. “Our defense has been the key to our wins all season long,” claimed SR Summer Traub when the Cowgirls faced the Lynx last time around. Friday night’s game, however, proved something different as the defense struggled to maintain the Lynx. After an impressive second quarter, the Cowgirls caught up, only down by five points at half-time with the score at 18-13.

The second half held much potential and high hopes for the Cowgirls to comeback, but the Lynx capitalized and took over the rest of the game. Scoring three, and letting up 11, the Cowgirls embarked on another challenging half. Down 13 points at 29-16, the Cowgirls needed a phenomenal final quarter to put them over Webster City. The hopes in the fans and players was diminished as the Lynx seized the game with a 44-22 victory over the Cowgirls.

Following the defeat from Webster City, the Cowgirls were set to host Clear Lake on Tuesday, Jan. 25.
