Abby Dorn goes to state!

“At the start of the season, it was tough because there weren’t a lot of girls that I could wrestle, so I was always losing,” Abby Dorn explained, though she turned that into a positive note as she said, “Losing to the guys I think made me stronger mentally.”

CGD’s Abby Dorn represented Clarion-Goldfield-Dows as she travelled to state for the 2022 NCC Girls Tournament. With the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union officially declaring girls wrestling a high school sport, and scheduling its debut for the 2022/2023 season, Abby Dorn made her way to the Iowa Girls State Wrestling tournament for her first time. Though only beginning her wrestling debut in November, Dorn displayed her strength and passion for the sport as she went home with two losses and one win. Dorn lost her first match, coincidentally to one of her childhood playmates by a fall. Dorn understood this was a learning experience for her, as it was her first year. As fast as she was taken down, she threw herself right back up with positivity and respect, as she shook the hands of her opponents and their coaches. Remaining humble and respectful, after Dorn pinned her opponent and won the dual, she helped her opponent off the mat. Dorn described her experience, stating, “The overall experience at state and this season was amazing,” Dorn claimed, “I met a bunch of new people through the sport.” Dorn shared her final thoughts, explaining the immense amount of support she received and her motivation for next season. “That last loss has made me want to do better in the upcoming tournaments that I plan on attending along with next season,” she said, “The amount of support that a person can get in this sport is truly amazing. Other teams supporting you, when you are the only one on your team. Other wrestlers sitting in my coaches corner while I was wrestling, to cheer me on really meant a lot. And especially the parents, fans, and coaches playing a big part in the Cowboy wrestling program.”

Look out for Abby Dorn next season, as she’ll be back stronger, smarter, and starving for sheer success! sports@wrightcountymonitor.com
