CGD third graders get inspired for LEGO League

Third graders at Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Elementary School have been busy building. The students have been participating in Lego League during their library time. LEGO League introduces science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to children through fun hands-on learning.

According to K-12 Librarian Kristina Moore, “Participants gain real-world problem-solving experience through a guided, global robotics program, helping today's students and teachers build a better future together.”

The LEGO build challenge this year is called Cargo Connect. Students are designing and creating an improved semi-truck to deliver packages. Recently, the third graders got a little inspiration for their LEGO creations from a few guests. A couple weeks ago, they had four guest speakers come in and talk about Transportation and Cargo.  Mike and Liz Ennis from Ennis Corp. Trucking and Brad De Vries and David Dolan from Gold-Eagle Cooperative spoke to the students.

“Our guest speakers came and shared what they do for transportation and what it looks like in Wright County,” explained Moore. “Students were excited to hear about how they pack cargo, what their cargo is, and where the cargo goes.” The third graders used that information to help build their own LEGO trucks.

Moore added that the students have other projects coming up as well. “They are also designing and coding a distribution center using LEGO,” she said. “So when we finish up the truck builds, we are going to be starting the distribution centers soon.”
