Area American Legion posts announce sponsorship for Wright County baseball teams

The Wright County Baseball and Softball Association is pleased to announce it is partnering with the Dows Legion Post 523 to offer travel baseball for high school and junior high students.

The teams will play under the banner of the Wright County Steeltoes, a nod to the blue-collar roots of many families in North Central Iowa. While focused on Wright County, the Steeltoes also bring in players from Hancock and Franklin Counties.

This is the first year the Dows Legion Post 523 has sponsored American Legion baseball teams for players in Wright County, though this is the third year that the Steeltoes have played in the American Legion Baseball League.

The Legion’s financial sponsorship, along with regular fundraising, is intended to help players to defray the costs of participating in travel sports. The Legion posts are required to sponsor teams but are not obligated to financially support a team. The Dows post opted to donate money to help make the Steeltoes more affordable for all players.

The Steeltoes will have two Legion teams for 2022, a Senior Legion team and a Junior Legion team. Ages for the players span 7th grade students through high school.

The Senior Legion team will be coached by Tatin Sorenson, a Belmond-Klemme alum who drives from Waterloo to coach. The Junior Team will be coached by Nick Barrett of Clarion.

The Wright County Baseball and Softball Association was started in 2018 by Kate Cochrane Nelson and her father Bruce Cochrane to provide more opportunities to play baseball and softball for children in the region.

In addition to the Legion teams, Steeltoes also has baseball and softball teams from ages 10 on up.
