Cowboys wrestling takes seventh at 1A State Dual Tourney

The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Cowboy wrestling team started Wednesday’s State Duals with a rather daunting task in trying to defeat number two seeded Lisbon. It was not to be, as the Lions steamrolled over them for a 74-6 win.

The dual started at 145 as the Lions won the six matches to pile up a huge lead. Kain Nelson (220) finally turned it around with a pin in just 35 seconds for their first points. Unfortunately, that’s all they would get in the dual.

Sixth seeded Denver was next, as the Cyclones defeated the Cowboys by a 43-33 final. Starting at 152, Garrett Seaba took a 16-1 technical fall for the first team lead. Denver won the next four to pull ahead themselves, with the Cowboys countering with three straight wins of their own. Nelson won by fall in :43, Daniel Chavez (285) pinned his man in 2:24 and Rigo Bobadilla (106) took a 14-6 major decision at the top of the order. Denver took the next four bouts before the red & black closed it out with Remi Hanson’s (138) fall in 1:24.

Their final dual of the day allowed them to get their first win 52-24 over eighth seed Woodbury Central. Bryce Allen (160) opened with a 15-4 major decision, which put the team on an early roll as Cael Ahrens (170) pinned his man in 1:57 and Camden Hanson (182) did the same in 49 seconds.

Following a Wildcats win at 195, the Cowboys got right back to work as Nelson won by fall in 46 seconds followed by Chavez squeaking out a 6-5 decision. The Wildcats took the 106-pound match, with Kaeden Langfitt (113) pinning his man in 1:03 followed by Tyler Stein winning a 7-2 match. The Cowboys would take three of the last five bouts to sew up the win, as Kale Kirstein scored a fall in 4:52, Remi Hanson a pin in :46 and Reed Abbas (145) did the same in 5:35.
