Cowboys put two on medal stand at State Wrestling

When it was over on Saturday night at Wells Fargo Arena, the Cowboy wrestling team had two medal winners in this year’s State Wrestling Tournament. Reed Abbas placed seventh at 145, while Tyler Stein too eighth at 113 pounds.

Abbas pinned Clark of Waco-Wayland in 2:28 in his opener, then lost 6-0 to Rahnavardi of Don Bosco. He came through the backside of the bracket to take a 7-5 win over Kime of Sumer-Fredricksburg, but lost again in an 8-6 decision to Mcgeough of MFL-MarMac. He won his final match in a 21-6 technical fall over Knight of Mount Ayr to finish 42-11 for the year.

Stein opened with a 7-5 win over Thompson of Logan-Magnolia. He lost to McDonough of Central Springs 8-2, then took his opening consolation side match in a 9-0 major decision over Steinlage of I-35-Truro. He followed that by losing to Bridgewater of North Linn 10-8 and to Ebaugh of Denver 6-1. He winds up 30-16 for the season.

Garrett Seaba failed to place in his 152-pound weight bracket, but did enjoy an 11-4 win over Roeder of Bellevue in his opening match. He then lost to Thomsen of Underwood 11-1 and to Subject of West Hancock 10-3 to finish 39-12 for the year.

Don Bosco won the 1A team title, followed by Lisbon and Underwood. The Cowboys were 34th in the final standings.
