Cowboys golf season ends with struggle at home Sectionals

On a 90-degree day at the golf course last Wednesday, the Cowboys struggled more than they have this season during 2A sectionals at home Clarmond. The team ultimately came in fourth place. Grundy Center handily won the event.

Team scores: Grundy Center- 312, Osage- 334, North Union-337, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows- 342, Forest City- 355; Garner Hayfield Ventura-369; Belmond-Klemme-392; Central Springs- 399.

Unfortunately, it was an off day for the Cowboys as individuals as well. Senior Jacob Moore, who has been the team’s strongest golfer, finished as the top CGD placer in 8th place with an 83. Elic Fjetland tied for 9th with an 84. Other CGD scores: Cale Kirstein- 88, Carson Harle- 87, Colin Kirstein- 89, Jackson Beisel- 92.

When all is said and done, this means that neither the team nor any CGD individual golfers will advance for a bid to the state tournament. “We lost our chances in the first round when we came in so high,” said Coach Pat O’Brien. “We tried desperately to bring it back and fought valiantly but it just wasn't enough to climb out of the hole we dug for ourselves.”

“It was a sad ending for those Seniors – Jacob, Elic, and Carson Harle,” added O’Brien. “Hopefully this is a great lesson for the underclassmen that you have to "win the hole" and if you don't – that hole is gone and you fight to "win the hole" that is in front of you. Jacob Moore and Elic Fjetland deserve special mention for what they did to raise the bar these past few years. I'm sure hoping that the returners and future golfers will follow that lead.”
