CGD girls golf at home Regionals last week, Christensen finishes in top 10

Two Clarion-Goldfield-Dows seniors got one more chance to golf at home last week. Emily Christensen and Karina Torres both had advanced to the second round of Regional golf held at Clarmond last week.

While neither home golfer will advance to the state meet, both girls put in some strong rounds. Christensen carded a 94 for ninth place and Torres scored a 110 for 24th place. “Karina and Emily did a great job representing CGD at the regional finals,” said Cowgirl Golf Coach Austin Heeran. “We faced an incredibly difficult region with a lot of really talented players, a few of which have a really good shot at a state title. Emily and Karina had amazing seasons to be proud of.”

The top two teams earn a bid to the state meet. On Wednesday, these were Sumner-Fredericksburg with 372 and Dike-New Hartford with 378.

The top six golfers also compete individually at state. Freshman Chloe Bolte from Sumner-Fredericksburg won the day with a lean 74. Senior Molly Fereday from Columbus Catholic took second with a 78. Other qualifying golfers: Sioux Central’s Kendra Casey (85), Dike-New Hartford’s Jillian Beuter (87), Pocahontas Area’s Nicole Panbecker (88), and DNH’s Anna Syharath (88). These golfers advance to the state meet May 26 -27.

Overall, Heeren was pleased with the totality of the season. “We had a great season and getting to finish it out with two girls making it to the regionals finals was an amazing way to end it. We are going to miss all eight seniors that we lose this year but are going to work hard this offseason and be ready to go next spring. We have a great group of sophomores and freshman ready to step in and play.”
