Senate Study Bill 3162, a legislative bill regarding lab-grown ‘meat’, recently underwent a rewording. The new version would prohibit the three public universities in Iowa from conducting research into the production of manufactured protein products.
Republican Senator Dawn Driscoll stated the bill would ensure taxpayer dollars would not be spent to support manufactured protein products over “real meat raised on Iowa farms”. The Study Bill further states that schools are not to purchase “cell-cultivated products”.
With artificially grown meats in recent headlines, one might wonder where their meat comes from. In Clarion and surrounding areas, there is no shortage of places to purchase ‘locally grown’ beef products from real-life farmers.
The Clarion Locker recently won the Champion Award from the Iowa Meat Processors Association for their yummy jerky. The family-owned and operated business is known for its fair prices, expansive meat offerings, friendly service, and obviously the jerky. Clarion Development Alliance Board President expressed her congratulations to Manie and Elmarie Nel, “We are so lucky to have you in our community!”
Just down a few doors from The Clarion Locker is The Main Scoop. The Main Scoop owners, Jared and Kelsey Burres are also long-time cattle farmers. The couple set up shop to sell their “quality farm-raised beef with local processing” alongside their delectable ice cream offerings. You can find beef sticks, jerky, summer sausage, steak, and ground beef from the Burres Beef farm.
Purple Ribbon Beef raises their cattle outside of Clarion. Pete and Cindy Hunter, along with their daughters Ashley (Jesse) and Sara, run the business. The Hunter family has been in the beef business for at least four generations. Purple Ribbon Beef works with its customers to ensure their needs are met, offering a wide variety of options. Orders can be placed online at purpleribbonbeef.com.
Last, but not least, is viral sensation Grand View Beef. Knute and Amanda Severson raise their grass-fed beef on the century-owned Severson Family Farm. The couple took over for Troy and Beth Severson who raised Horned Hereford cattle. Their website states the family, “remains passionately committed to stewarding God’s cattle and soil and sharing our family’s calling with you.” Grand View Beef can be ordered online at grandviewbeef.com.
