The Unity Point Lifeflight helicopter was spotted in the sky above Clarion last week. The helicopter was in town for EMS training purposes and attracted a crowd of curious townspeople. Police officers and volunteers reviewed safety procedures and communications during the hands-on training. The crew left the field for the classroom shortly after.
Training is a crucial aspect of the city's ambulance workers' and EMT’s priorities. Iowa's recertification requirements for the workers range from 8 to 30 hours biennially, depending on the certification level. Their training covers topics such as HIPAA compliance, protocol and policy reviews, and blood-borne pathogens. It's safe to say they've had a busy schedule. It doesn’t appear the team is slowing down anytime soon though.
The team plans to be trained regarding first responder mental health, conduct a water rescue session, and review sports injury protocols. They will brush up on EMT medication administration and emergency driving as well. HazMat training is on the horizon for the team, too. Mandatory reporter training, documentation, CPR training, and advanced life support courses are also part of their ongoing education.
When one considers all the training and education requirements that go along with emergency services, there should be no question about the skilled hands that you or your loved one are entrusted to during an emergency.
