King and Greenfield take the county, incumbent supervisors win over challengers
It was a different kind of primary this year due to COVID-19. Absentee ballots were far more numerous that in-person voting. County Auditor Betty Ellis reported that 349 people appeared to vote at the Red Shed Event Center in Clarion on Tuesday, which was Wright County’s only polling location due to health and safety concerns. By election day, Ellis had received 1,649 absentee ballots back, though more may come in the mail in the next couple of days. Taking into account all the in-person votes and the absentee ballots that have been received, here are the election results:
In the race for U.S. Representative, District 4, Republican incumbent Steve King (510 votes) is leading in the county over Randy Feenstra (444 votes), though Feenstra has already been declared the winner on a state level. Bret Richards received 202 votes, Jeremy Taylor 81, and Steven Reeder 51. Democrat J.D. Scholten ran opposed in the primary and came away with 610 votes.
In the Democratic primary for US Senate, Theresa Greenfield, who ultimately won the race, took Wright County with 352 votes. Michael Franken came in second with 151 votes. Other vote-getters were Kimberly Graham with 69, Eddie J. Mauro with 64, and Cal Woods with 9. Republican incumbent Joni Ernst ran unopposed in the primary.
The only other opposed races on the ballot were for District 1 and 3 Wright County Supervisor positions. Both incumbents won those races. In district one, Rick Rasmussen came out over Jason Wessels, 765 votes to 546. Karl Helgevold took the district 3 race over Mike Boyd with 828 votes to Boyd’s 461.
Editor’s note: the election results are considered “unofficial” until all the eligible absentee ballots have been counted and the votes have been canvassed. Check back to the Monitor’s website and next week’s paper for more election coverage.
