In a game postponed from Wednesday to Thursday, the Cowboy baseball team traveled to Rogers Park to take on St. Edmond. They plated single runs in the third and the sixth to stay close to the Gaels, but it just wasn’t enough in a 4-2 loss to the home team.
Tyler Stein, Mateo Martinez, Cael Chase, Nevan Foss and Kain Nelson all reached on singles, with Martinez and Nelson scoring. Stein was credited with an RBI. Nelson and Reed Abbas drew a walk each, with Stein, Abbas and Preston Gardner all recording a stolen base,
Caleb Krueger threw five innings, allowing only one earned run on five hits with two walks and three K’s. Nelson pitched the balance and had one strikeout.
“Krueger was very effective and efficient throughout the game,” stated head skipper Nick Willwerth. “We had a couple of chances to take control of the game with runners in scoring position. Credit to the Gaels for making the plays to stem our potential rally. It was good to get Stein going offensively. I think he was pressing a bit early on.”
They returned from Clear Lake on Friday with another good effort in a 3-2 loss to the Lions. Martinez doubled in his only hit, drove in a run and scored once. Foss and Chase both stroked base hits, with Nevan driving in a run. Stein crossed for the other score. Nelson drew a walk.
Stein threw five strong innings, allowing three earned on a six-hitter with two walks, one hit batter and one strikeout. Damien Bjorklund-Strong pitched an inning with one walk and one strikeout.
“This was a solid baseball game, with no errors by either team,” said the head coach. “This is the best Tyler has looked on the mound in his career. He had three pitches working effectively. We did a great job of coming out right away and putting pressure on the Lions. This was the first game that I felt our hitters didn’t make the needed adjustments each time through the order. Credit to McHenry (Lion pitcher) for making the adjustments after we hit him hard in the first.”
Last Monday’s game at Iowa Falls-Alden was cancelled due to COVID-19 problems on the Cadet team. The Cowboys host Webster City this Wednesday then Algona on Friday.
