Tim Morrison came to C-G-D to not only take the athletic director position, but more importantly to try to resurrect Cowboy football to more wins. He already has liked what he sees from his charges during camp and early practices.
“We have increased our numbers in the football program, which has allowed for more competition at practice,” stated the head mentor. “This is going to be a strength for our team this fall. However, we have got to develop our offensive and defensive guys to be better at the line of scrimmage.” He feels the key to the season, in this age of COVID-19, is to stay safe and healthy. “Our team needs to learn how to play hard every down,” he said. “If we can do that we’ll be fine.”
Among with the experienced returning seniors on the roster, top signal-caller Shane Conlon returns after throwing for 377 yards and three scores. He’s likely to compete with Christian Gaytan for the starting job. He passed for 113 yards and two TD’s, and finished with an impressive 120.8 rating a year ago. Whoever is under center will have Mateo Martinez back as a wide-out after compiling 324 receiving yards (17.1 yard average) for five touchdowns. Trenton Jergenson returns as the workhorse in the backfield after gaining 405 yards last season.
On the defensive side, several capable tacklers return. Kain Nelson’s 26 solo stops led the list a year ago, followed by Martinez (18) and Bryce Allen (17). Other seniors that will be called upon to step up on defense include Damien Bjorklund (16), Rafael Jimenez, Camden Hanson, Remi Hansen and Ray Boeset. “Offensively, I’ve been impressed with our skill positions,” said Morrison. “We have some kids with ability with the football in their hands. We need to make progress in our offensive line to have success. Defensively, pursuit is paramount. We must run to the football every snap. Playing as hard as we can every snap will determine our success on defense.”
The new head coach is joined on the staff by Mike Bowman, Jordon McLaughlin, Scott Scheffel, Caleb Vogel and Craig Warnke. “We are in a very competitive district, and we are excited about the challenges ahead,” concluded Morrison.
