The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows football team saw their first action 2024 last Friday, August 30th. Eagle Grove, the Cowboys’ longtime Wright County rivals, arrived at CGD Middle School full of pep and spirit, but Clarion-Goldfield-Dows commanded the field from beginning to end thanks to a powerful run game and smothering defense. The home team won the non-conference contest 48-8 and secured their seventh straight victory over Eagle Grove.
On the first Cowboy possession of the game, junior Selvin Gonzalez scored immediately on a 37-yard TD run. Gonzalez also kicked the PAT to make it 7-0.
Later in the first quarter, Charlie Campbell got his turning with the rock. Quarterback JD Morrical handed the ball off to Campbell five straight times on the same possession, which eventually resulted in a 3-yard TD.
After the Cowboy defense forced another Eagle Grove punt, Morrical used his legs to reach the end zone on a quarterback sneak in the second quarter.
Morrical also showed his versatility as a two-way player when he intercepted a pass from EG quarterback Brett Ascherl. Minutes later, JD threw his first TD pass of the season with a 14-yard dart to tight end Huxley Lingenfelter.
The Cowboys led 34-0 at half and never looked back.
On the defensive side, the Cowboys managed to keep Eagle Grove out of the end zone until early in the fourth quarter. Lingenfelter dominated the trenches with two sacks, a fumble recovery, and six total tackles. Morrical and Owen Sweeney both snagged an interception apiece.
On offense, Lingenfelter had three receptions for 40 yards and a TD. Gonzalez had 10 carries for 124 yards and two touchdowns, and Campbell had 9 carries for 90 yards and two touchdowns.
