Tim Morrison’s debut as the Cowboy football coach was not exactly a memorable one, but they did keep the game from getting out of hand in last Friday’s 18-4 loss to the Bulldogs from Hampton.
“We need to focus on what we can control,” said the head coach. “We had too many mistakes. We cannot turn the ball over and expect to win football games.”
Nevan Foss was the leading rusher with 22 yards, followed by Trenton Jergenson with 12 yards. Shane Conlon threw for 30 yards at 4 of 11, but also suffered three crucial picks. Christian Gaytan went 1 of 4 for 25 yards and one interception. Mateo Martinez caught three balls for 38 yards and Jaxon Carpenter one for 17 yards.
Gaytan kicked off twice for a 55.0 yard average, while Kain Nelson booted five punts for a 35.0 yard average. Martinez returned one kick for 27 yards, while Tyson Berning fielded a kick for no gain. Aiden Harrington returned two punts for two total yards, Martinez one for 27 yards and Foss one for 10 yards.
The tackle numbers show Foss with four solo and 8.0 total, Reed Abbas at four solo and 5.0 total and Nelson at three solo and 5.0 total. Bryce Allen made two solo stops and 5.5 total tackles, while Jergenson finished with two solo and 4.0 total tackles. Cale Kirstein, Camden Hanson and Nik Christopherson all had one solo stop each. Other totals show Christopherson at 3.5, Hanson at 3.0, Kirstein at 2.5 and both Rafael Jimenez and Erick Perez at 2.0 each.
Nelson made three of his for a loss of yards, while Foss, Kirstein, Hanson and Christopherson all recorded one for loss each.
“The times we had all 11 guys doing their jobs we had some positive results,” added Morrison. “We will focus on execution of our offense, defense and special teams this week. I can’t wait to see the improvement our team makes from week one to week two. We are looking forward to another challenge this Friday night.”
