The high school gym was filled to the brim with loyal wrestling fans last Thursday night, and the (2A) #2 Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Cowboys gave their home crowd a show by sweeping Charles City, St. Edmond, and (1A) #1 Don Bosco.<\/p>\n

First, CGD blanked the Charles City Comets, 84-0.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

106-pounder Cole Wibholm set the tempo for the entire meet with a 10-second fall, and Estuardo Lopez (113), Paxton Redenius (120), Dawson Beyer (150), Ryland Morgan (165), Easton Beyer (190), and JT Kelso (285) all followed suit with pins of their own.<\/p>\n

Only one match lasted for longer than a period.<\/p>\n

Next, the Cowboys won 77-6 over their NCC foes from St. Edmond.<\/p>\n

Wibholm, Lopez, Angel Cortes (126), Dawson Beyer, Colin Sesker (157), and JT Kelso all won by fall.\u00a0 Redenius won via technical fall over his Gael opponent.<\/p>\n

That win would set the stage for CGD\u2019s final dual of the night against 1A powerhouse and top-ranked Don Bosco, a squad loaded with state champions and place-winners.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur kids had been looking forward to this match-up since we lost to them 37-36 at the Battle of Waterloo in late December,\u201d Coach Cory Yoder told The Monitor after the quad.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cWe were down 32-6 to start the meet, but our kids rallied to cut the lead to 32-27 after Easton Beyer\u2019s fall at 175.\u201d<\/p>\n

Linden Phetxoumphone (132), Dawson Beyer, and Sesker all recorded falls, and Morgan won by decision.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe turning point in the meet came when Eli Hodge got the crowd on their feet with a meet-changing fall to put the Cowboys up 33-32 with two matches remaining,\u201d Yoder continued.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cEli\u2019s match was huge.\u00a0\u00a0He went out there with a lot of pressure on his shoulders and got the job done.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBosco got a pin at 215 to retake the lead 38-33.\u00a0\u00a0Then, JT Kelso set the crowd on fire with his 11-second pin to secure the upset win over the top-ranked team in 1A.\u00a0\u00a0JT finished it off for us with a big pin, but it was our team that won the meet for us!\u00a0\u00a0Everyone did their job!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere was a lot going through my head to start the meet, and when we got down 32-6 I was a little worried, but Dawson Beyer\u2019s pin got the train started, and we took off,” Yoder admitted.\u00a0 \u00a0“When Eli got the pin at 190, the gym erupted, and I knew we had the meet.\u00a0\u00a0The CGD crowd was unbelievable and the environment was electric.\u00a0\u00a0I can\u2019t thank them enough for all their support.\u00a0\u00a0There wasn\u2019t a seat to be had!\u201d<\/p>\n
