GC council swears in new officer

GRUNDY CENTER- The Grundy Center Police Department is officially back at full strength after the city council swore in Trent Wood as the newest officer during Monday night’s regular meeting.

Wood is already a certified officer and has completed the law enforcement academy, and the department now has four full-time officers, Police Chief Doug Frost, two reservists and one part-timer on the staff.

The council voted 4-1 to approve third and final readings of the two percent rate increases for water and sanitary sewer, with Chad Hamann dissenting on both matters. A third and final reading of a motion to approve installing stop signs at the intersection of L Avenue and Indigo Street passed unanimously.

Later in the meeting, the council discussed its codification and the enforcement or lack thereof of an ordinance requiring fences around home swimming pools.

“We need to get some definition there, because fences are expensive,” Councilman Dave Stefl said.

During the public safety report, Captain Kyle Waugh of the police department noted a tagger who had been spraying downtown buildings but added that he had been caught due to video footage. During his councilman’s comment, Councilman Butch Kuester inquired about a pickup truck with a flat tire and no license plates and whether it could be towed, and Waugh responded that he would check in on it the next day.

The next council meeting will be held on August 2 and will include a public hearing on the proposed fireworks ordinance.

  IN OTHER BUSINESS, the council:

·      Approved the consent agenda as listed.
