NORTH ENGLISH – He was quick, and he proved to be able to juggle multiple sports at one time.
The News-Review senior male athlete of the year is English Valleys Gage Heyne. Throughout the entire 2024-25 school year Heyne seemed to just keep getting better in the sports that he played.
Known mostly as a distance runner, Heyne showcased his speed at the State cross country meet in October where he was able to power himself to a fourth place finish. He finished 11 seconds behind the leader. For most of the race Heyne was able to stay right in the footsteps of the leader, but the final mile of the race was what separated Heyne from the winner.
For most of the cross country season Heyne was unmatched in local competition, winning almost all of his meets. He was able to win the conference meet by a wide margin.
Heyne used the winter to rest up, but he returned to action in the spring. In addition to running track, he also took to the golf course as well.
Heyne had success in both track and the golf course. He was able to win the district track meet in the 3,200, 1,600 and 800 meter runs. Additionally he was the anchor leg on the distance medley relay team, which qualified to State as well.
At the State track meet Heyne was able to finish second in the 3,200 and 1,600 meter races. He was fourth in the 800 and his distance medley relay team placed fifth as well.
Heyne was able to golf well throughout the season. At the conference golf meet Heyne was third overall. After qualifying to the district golf meet, Heyne would finish second at districts, just three strokes off of the leader, to qualify for the State meet.
At the State golf meet Heyne shot a first round score of 85, and then a second round score of 81, which placed him 26th overall in the meet.
