S-K bowling rolls into the start of the 2025-26 season

 NEWTON –  Both the boys and the girls SK bowling teams opened their 2025-26 season over the past two weeks.

For the first time, the new Iowa state high school rules have the boys and girls

seasons staggered with the girls starting two weeks sooner than the boys. This change will

result in the state tournaments for each to be on different dates in February 2026.  

Nov. 22 saw the SK girls begin their regular season with a victory over Knoxville;

as, the varsity girls rolled for a pin tally of 1,615 to begin their overall stats.

On Dec. 2 SK’s head coach Austin Bruns traveled with both the boys and girls teams

to Cardinal Lanes in Newton to take on the Newton Cardinals. The girls fell to Newton during

the meet with Sophie Young providing the SK highlight of a 372 two-game series.

The boys’ varsity team opened their season by handing the Newton Cardinals their second

loss of the season. SK’s total number of pins was 2,715 with Newton tallying 2,593. Senior

Wells Clark rolled the meet’s high game of 248 while junior Liam VanVoltenburg claimed the

high two-game series of 443. Other boys’ varsity team members contributing to the win were

Owen Clark, Caden Meyer, Aidan Greiner and Easton Olson.  

On Dec. 6, both the SK boys’ and girls’ teams were back in Newton for the Newton

Invitational tournament. The Class 1A S-K teams were up against larger schools which

included Waukee (5A), Oskaloosa (4A), Gilbert (4A), Pella (4A), Knoxville (3A), Newton (4A),

and Mason City (4A).  

The S-K girls placed second in the tournament with Sophie Young claiming third place in the

individual overall with a 408 two-game series. Other S-K girls’ team members responsible for

their success were Kaylie Montgomery, Calli McCoid, Caylee Corbin, and Brianna Belvel.

The SK boys placed 3rd overall at the tournament just behind the first-place team of

Oskaloosa and the second-place team of Waukee. SK senior Wells Clark lead the team with a

195 and a 227 for a 422 two-game series, followed closely by sophomore Aidan Greiner with

a 223 and a 192 for a 415 two-game series. Other members contributing to the team’s

achievement were Liam VanVoltenburg, Owen Clark, Caden Meyer and Bentley Ingle.

The S-K teams will host Pella on Monday December 9 at their home lanes of Keokuk County

Bowl beginning at 1:00 p.m.
