IOWA CITY – Ten points. That’s all that separated Sigourney from a possible trip to the State basketball tournament.

In late February last year the Sigourney girls basketball season came to an end when the Savages fell to Springville in the class 1A regional final contest. Although the Savages would ultimately fall 65-44, for a few times in the second half the Savages were just 10 points away from the lead.

One key moment came late in the third quarter when Ava Fisch had been able to take a long outside jump shot that fell right through the nylon. That trimmed the Springville lead to nine points and put the Orioles in a precarious position.

Sigourney was on the attack, but Springville would take a timeout and adjust their play to be able to go on and extend their lead over the course of the final quarter.

The game ultimately ended the Sigourney season with a 19-6 overall record on the season. They had also made strides from the start of the season until the end, allowing first year coach, Kaylee Weber to gain experience and trust with her team.

“My message to the team was that Springville was a really good team and that tonight’s game doesn’t take anything away from how proud I am of the team,” Weber said. “The girls were able to grow with me, and I grew with the team. My last message to the team was we are going to be back to this game, and I have every intention to bring that promise true in future seasons.”
