SIGOURNEY – Everyone wants to do well at home.

Running at his last home meet ever, Sigourney senior Troy Klett was able to make sure his last run at the Sigourney cross country meet would be a memorable one.

As he started to round the final turn of the race it didn’t look like Klett was going to be the winner of the Sigourney cross country race. He had two runners in front of him and a very large hill to maneuver.

That didn’t bother the senior. In fact, it only seemed to play into his strategy.

“I knew it was my last time running here, and I was ready to do anything I could to get the win,” Klett said after the Sept. 9 race. “I was able to catch up to (the first place runner) about midway down the hill.”

Once Klett caught the runner in front of him he used the extensive knowledge of the grounds at the Sigourney golf course to his knowledge.

“I’ve had quite a bit of experience running here since it is our home course. I’ve known forever that my strength is in the downhills,” Klett said. “He was able to put some distance on me during the uphills, but I just knew that it was a down hill run coming to the finish line and I was going to have to use that to make up the distance.”

Klett used the final down hill to pass the WACO runner in front of him. Within sight of the finish line Klett was able to power his way past the WACO runner and finish just .33 seconds ahead of the WACO challenger.

It was the fist time in over a decade that a Sigourney runner had been able to win the home cross country meet.
