SIGOURNEY – After more than five years of fundraising, the new Kiwanis pavilion on the southeast corner of the Sigourney Square was dedicated on Oct. 4. The pavilion, which was constructed over the summer, is intended to be used for concerts and during the city’s Fourth of July and Christmas festivities. Work to build the pavilion started with discussion of adding a roof to the bandstand in the southwest corner; after learning a roof would have to be built to the side of the bandstand and that it would be costly to fix up the bandstand, Kiwanis opted to build a new pavilion instead. The dedication of the pavilion featured a bags tournament and performances from the bands Double Trouble and the Boys.
“We are delighted with tonight. All of us who have been involved in this project, are looking out around the square and seeing people over here watching, and a bunch of people over here watching, and a bunch of people over here watching,” former Sigourney Kiwanis president Stuart Grossman said, gesturing to the gathered crowd. “And little kids to grandma and great grandpa. And this is exactly what we hoped this would be.”
Grossman gave heavy thanks to the county, City of Sigourney, Matt Welter, the Renner family, Ross Yoder, Billy Tremmel, Kelly McDowell, Amber Thompson, Atwood Electric, and Mike Bishop for work they did on getting the pavilion built. He then handed the mic over to current Sigourney Kiwanis President Dave Peterson and Kiwanis member Jerry Wohler read off the names of people and organizations that donated to the project. Special thanks was given to the Order of the Eastern Star, who were the first donors to the project, and to David and Noreen Revier. Order of the Eastern Star members and the Revier family were invited into the pavilion for the ribbon cutting.
The list of donors, written on a plaque attached to the pavilion, includes:
