Fairfield crash kills teen; two Pekin school staff injured

FAIRFIELD — An 18-year-old Fairfield woman was killed and two others were injured in a two-vehicle crash late Friday night in Fairfield, according to the Iowa State Patrol accident report.

The crash occurred at about 10:18 p.m. in the 2100 block of Hemlock Avenue near Cedar Creek. According to the report, a vehicle traveling north on Hemlock Avenue lost control due to weather conditions and was struck on the side by another vehicle.

Emmelia Miller, 18, of Fairfield, was pronounced dead at the scene. According to the accident report, Miller was not wearing a seat belt.

Two people injured in the crash were teachers at Pekin Community School District’s high school. In an email sent to community members Sunday afternoon, district officials said staff members James Lyman, 26, of Fairfield, and Ashlyn Hotchkiss, 24, of Urbana, currently living in Fairfield, were involved in the crash and were receiving medical care. The district said additional details would be shared as appropriate.

According to the Iowa State Patrol report, Lyman was not transported for medical treatment and was wearing a seat belt. Hotchkiss was transported to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics by Jefferson County Ambulance and was not wearing a seat belt, according to the report.

Morgan Anderson, 20, of Fairfield, was identified as the driver of the second vehicle involved. No injuries were reported for Anderson, according to the Iowa State Patrol report.

The crash remains under investigation.

Agencies assisting at the scene included the Iowa State Patrol, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Fairfield Police Department, Fairfield Fire Department, Libertyville Fire Department, and Jefferson County Ambulance.
