PACKWOOD — Pekin Schools have partnered with Sleep in Heavenly Peace–Washington/Keokuk County as part of an upcoming Community Service Day focused on helping children in need in Keokuk County.

Sleep in Heavenly Peace is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring that no child sleeps on the floor. The organization provides beds to children ages 3–17 who are currently sleeping on floors, sofas or in other unsafe or uncomfortable conditions. Through the partnership, Pekin Schools will take a hands-on role in supporting local families.

On April 8, Pekin students and volunteers will help build beds that will be delivered to children in the community. In preparation for the build, Pekin Schools are hosting a Community Bedding Drive to ensure each bed includes a complete and comfortable bedding set.

The bedding drive is accepting new, unopened twin-size items, including sheet sets, comforters, bed-in-a-bag sets, standard pillows and waterproof mattress protectors. Because the beds are delivered to children ages 3–17, neutral or kid-friendly colors and patterns are encouraged.

To make donating easier, organizers have created an Amazon storefront where community members can purchase needed bedding items online. Items will be shipped directly to the school. Donations may also be purchased from local retailers and dropped off in person.

Monetary donations are also accepted. All funds will be used to purchase bedding supplies, with donations remaining within the Washington/Keokuk County chapter to directly support local children and families.

Community members are encouraged to involve workplaces, schools, churches, clubs and other groups in the bedding drive. Every contribution helps support the effort.

All bedding and monetary donations may be dropped off or sent to Christy Gambell at the Pekin High School office. Families in need of a bed or individuals seeking additional information may also contact Gambell at christy.gambell@pekincsd.org

Through community service and collaboration, Pekin Schools and Sleep in Heavenly Peace aim to ensure no child in the community sleeps on the floor.
