It was a long night for the Cowboy football team at Dodger Stadium versus St. Edmond. The Gaels relentless attack gave them a 30-8 win, as the visitors could only mount one successful drive as their offensive woes continue. That score was courtesy of a six-yard run by Trenton Jergenson, who also tacked on the two-point conversion.
“You cannot allow that many big plays on defense and expect to win football games,” stated head coach Tim Morrison. “We play really well on defense for a lot of snaps, and then we have a breakdown. Our breakdowns are on us and have nothing to do with our opponent.”
Shane Conlon finished with 4 of 15 in passing for 47 yards and an interception, with Mateo Martinez 1 of 1 for three yards. Jergenson totaled 78 yards on the ground in 16 carries (4.9 average), with Nevan Foss adding 18 yards on six attempts and Coady Olson 12 yards on one tote of the ball. Olson also caught two passes for 37 total yards (18.5 average), with Aiden Harrington making one catch for 13 yards and Jergenson one catch for three yards.
Foss made five solo tackles and 9.5 total. Martinez had two solo stops and 2.0 total, Jergenson three solo and 6.0 total and Preston Gardner three solo and 5.0 total. Reed Abbas had three solo and 7.0 total, with Camden Hanson at 4 solo and 4.5 total. Bryce Allen had two solo and 3.5 total tackles, while Luis Delacruz, Kain Nelson and Daniel Chavez all made one solo stop apiece. Luis and Kain finished with 2.0 total tackles and Daniel 1.5. Nelson had one sack and 1.5 tackles for loss, with Abbas getting a solo sack and sharing one with Allen. Allen had 2.5 tackles for loss, Abbas and Nelson 1.5 each and Delacruz one.
“On the offensive side of the ball, we have to figure out what our identity is,” said Morrison. “We are not playing consistent offensive football. Our passing game has been a non-factor. We need to continue to improve in throwing the ball at every position. Protect, throw and catch has been a struggle thus far. We are playing hard, but we need to begin playing smart.”
This week-South Central Calhoun: “This team will present another great challenge for us,” said Morrison. “They will line up and run the ball right at us. They do a great job of attacking downhill and wearing defenses down. On the defensive side, they keep offenses guessing by pressuring many different people. We need to make sure we are sound in our assignments, or we’ll continue to struggle scoring points. We are excited to have a good week of practice and make improvement from week two into week three.”
