Each year, the livestock barns at the Wright County Fair see hundreds of visitors from all over Iowa. Behind the scenes, the barns are under constant evaluation through the Herdsmanship Contest, an often overlooked yet important part of the fair experience.
This contest, open to all 4-H clubs that show more than three species, awards overall herdsmanship honors to the club that demonstrates outstanding care and presentation of their animals. The purpose of the award goes beyond bragging rights; the ultimate goal is to instill a sense of responsibility, pride, and professionalism among the young animal exhibitors.
Judging criteria include the cleanliness of animals and pens, proper feeding and care, exhibitor conduct, and the quality of stall signage. The 2024 winners of the Herdsmanship award were the Wright County P.I.G. 4-H Club.
Through this initiative, the Wright County Fair continues to promote high standards and character-building experiences in youth livestock exhibition.
