EAGLE GROVE, Iowa — A refreshed and renewed veterans memorial sign welcomed visitors to Rose Hill Cemetery just in time for the Memorial Day ceremony Monday morning, thanks to the combined efforts of community members and local donors.

The project, which included replacing the aging sign that had stood since 2015, was spearheaded by Daryl Hansen, with significant help from Tony Axtel and Mark Ketchum, as well as several other volunteers in the American Legion, and otherwise.

“Lots of people worked on it,” Ketchum said. “It looks so much better now than it did. It’s just something that’s got to be done once in a while, to keep it looking nice.”

The newly installed signage was printed for free by Printing Services Inc. (PSI) in Belmond. Eagle Building Supply of Eagle Grove contributed the necessary lumber. Funding was provided by the James R. Johnson Foundation, administered by Kevin and Richard Cahalan.

“We want to thank the people who run the Johnson trust, the Cahalans,” Ketchum said, adding, “PSI, and Eagle Building Supply, who donated materials.”

While one final panel remains to be printed, the memorial was ready and standing proud for the solemn observance Monday morning.

“The other side is beautiful,” Ketchum said. “Yeah, it looks so much better now than it did.”
