During the August 4 meeting of the Keota City Council, the council discussed tearing down a dilapidated house owned by the city located at 108 West Keokuk. Public Works Director Micah Harmsen explained that the property was not structurally sound and stated that it wasn’t in the city’s best interest to spend a lot of money repairing it. He stated that the 38×16 foot garage next to the house was in good shape and that someone had reached out to him about wanting to purchase and move the garage of the property. The council approved opening bids to tear down the house and purchase the garage.
The council approved having an employee appreciation event golf tournament at Lagos Acres Country Club on August 15 to thank employees for all the work over the summer. Councilman Matt Greiner explained it would cost $30 per player and $10 for carts. Councilman Mike Bender suggested a budget not to exceed $1,500 for the event and offering prizes for things like best shot at the golf tournament. City offices will be closed on August 15 due to the tournament.
Harmsen stated that the dump was very busy, but that they were still having issues with people dumping trash. He stated he wanted to keep it open, especially with the storms they had last week, but that he would have to start sending letters and fines out to people who dump trash. Harmsen stated that he hadn’t seen the person who had been leaving trash, but that he had a good idea who it was and would be sending a warning letter.
Harmsen stated that the pool would close for the season on the then upcoming Friday, August 8. He stated that the pool would not be drained right away, because they had to burn through the remaining chemicals. He stated that they could leave the splash pad open for a few more weeks. Greiner stated that the council could take turns locking the splash pad at eight p.m. while Harmsen is on vacation. Harmsen stated that they have to test the water every four hours and suggested having the splash pad run from noon to eight, with testing at noon and four, so they only have to test twice a day.
Mayor Tony Cansler stated that he had spoken to the Iowa League of Cities about arranging an audit for the past year’s financials, due to a new city clerk taking over.
