CORALVILLE – What a few days it turned out to be in Coralville last February.

To start off both Pekin and Sigourney-Keota were able to send record amount of athletes to the IGHSAU State wrestling tournament. For Sigourney-Keota they would end up sending three total wrestlers to the State wrestling tournament.

Everyone would have their eye on undefeated wrestler, senior, Reanah Utterback. She wouldn’t disappoint as they pinned her way through the 115-pound bracket. In the championship match Utterback was able to pin her Don Bosco opponent and capture her second-straight State title. She was also able to to finish her career with over 175 wins. Her last two seasons on the wrestling mat, she was never defeated once.

The rest of the Sigourney-Keota wrestlers also experienced success. Kia Montgomery finished the tournament with a 1-2 overall record. Freshman Karley Greiner would go 0-2, but her experiences at State wrestling would help her as she prepared for the future.

Pekin would send four wrestlers to the State meet with Lexa Nelson having the most success.

Nelson qualified in the 105-pound bracket and would eventually finish sixth overall.

Throughout the tournament Nelson had to overcome a lot of adversity. She fought through every challenge and was able to climb the podium. That has helped her start this season undefeated.

The other Pekin wrestlers had success as well.

Hailey Pedrick wrestled in the 140-pound bracket where she finished the meet with a 1-2 overall record.

Lila Miller would wrestle in the 135-pound bracket. Although she was defeated in both her matches, she was able to gain experience.

Rylee Frye wrestled in the 235-pound bracket. She was pinned in both of her matches, but as a freshman making it to the State tournament, she gained valuable lessons.
